Tardive Dyskinesia & Reglan Lawsuits

Have you been injured by corporate negligence due to a shoddy or even dangerous product?

Over the last thirty years, government has abandoned its role as guardian of the public good and has relied on the unfettered free market to regulate itself. The argument is that if private business fails to provide or perform, consumers will turn away and seek satisfaction elsewhere.

Legal Assitance

Legal assistance is available to those who used Reglan (metoclopramide) and have developed Tardive Dyskinesia. If you or a loved one were prescribed Reglan and have since developed Tardive Dyskinesia, you may wish to file a lawsuit to cover the cost of medical expenses and compensate for the pain and suffering caused by the adverse effects of the drug. If you would like additional information or have questions about Reglan-related lawsuits, please call 1-800-584-6601.

This is all well and good when it comes to many ordinary consumer goods such as clothing, electronics, entertainment, and other products. However, when it comes to potentially hazardous or even deadly products, the result can be disastrous for people.

A case in point are pharmaceuticals. In a profit-driven health care system, drug companies in their eagerness to recoup their investment and generate large payouts for their shareholders and CEOs have been increasingly lax when it comes to testing new medications. This has been exacerbated by the influence of drug-company lobbyists and the millions of dollars that are paid to lawmakers encouraging them to remove barriers and regulations that stand in the way of quick approval by the FDA as they rush these poorly-tested medications to market.

Are they concerned about patient safety? Not really. Are they concerned about accountability under the law? Somewhat. Callously, these drug companies, like auto manufacturers, factor litigation and lawsuits into their production costs. This is one reason that many of these cases are settled "out of court."

Tardive dyskinesia, or TD, is a series of movement disorders suffered by patients as the result of a class of prescription drugs known as dopamine antagonists. These drugs are usually prescribed as part of the treatment for mental illness, primarily schizophrenia; however, in the case of Reglan(R) and similar drugs, they were also used to treat certain gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroparesis and acid reflux disease.

Regardless of indication, the side-effects are often the same; about one-third of all patients who have been treated with dopamine antagonists develop symptoms of tardive dyskinesia - and the results are devastating. Because of their inability to control facial expressions and other voluntary movements, these patients become socially isolated. In some cases, the condition can be painful, physically disabling and even life-threatening (as when the larynx and esophagus is involved).

Under the law, this constitutes an injury for which you are entitled to compensation under tort law. Although you can file a lawsuit on your own behalf, this is inadvisable; these large pharmaceutical corporations have their own skilled and ruthless litigators and inexhaustible financial resources. The wisest course of action is to contact a law firm with experience in Reglan litigation; most reputable firms will evaluate your free of charge and represent you in court on a contingency basis - meaning that if you fail to win a judgment, you pay nothing in legal fees.
